Brian Eno's BBC John Peel Lecture 2015

I found this lecture with Brian Eno really interesting, I took notes on some of the points that stood out to me as I listened.

I took notes on a bit of his background that I thought could be relevant as previously I wasn't aware of Eno's work.
  • Started as an art student in the 60's
  • Called U2's 5th man and Bowie's muse
  • 1975 discreet music creation of ambient music
  • Created the art piece "77 million paintings" (a piece in where you never see the same image twice)
I think what this tells you is that Brain Eno is definitely experienced in the knowledge of the arts giving the lecture context.

Lecture:

Eno goes into the lecture by highlighting the issue of STEM subjects being compared to the arts and how often times are seen as much less important. He mentioned some of the criticism that had arose around this topic such as"thought shouldn't go into art and humanities compared to stem subjects"

Specifically Eno posed the following questions to consider "is art a luxury? or does it do more" and "is there a way to create a situation where the arts can flourish?"

When we ask twenty scientists what they do we will probably get very similar answers, but if we ask artists the same questions we get very different answers.

What are we doing when we make art? Art is everything, its in the clothes we wear,  the way we move and what we eat, like animals these are things that are essential in part of our survival but how we differ from any other species is that we put a lot of thought into the stylization everything we do. There are lots of things that could be seen as unnecessary such as our appearance, our hairstyles, choice of makeup, tattoos, clothing are a way of broadcasting ourselves, but we care about these things and they are a huge part of our culture.

Something interesting Eno mentions that when children play pretend they learn and develop with imagining, when we grow older we don't have that same perspective as we did but we can acknowledge that its an essential part of our growth, when we make art as adults in a way thats our play and we're channeling the same thing we once did without thought, we use that same vital ability creating something throughout our lives.

Another thing that Eno mentions and a point I really liked and stuck with me even after I'd finished hearing the whole lecture was the mention of 'little worlds' and when we make things we're creating those little worlds and that everything is a contraction of little worlds. Novels and films are another way into these little worlds, intaking information expands these "worlds" and is essential to growth.

Another perspective of art from BBA (biology, behavior and arts)

"art is the exposure to the tensions and problems of a false world, in order for man to endure the tensions and problems of the real world" exposure to the joy sand freedoms of a false world - in order that we might recognise and locate the real world, for many art is a safe place.

Something that came to mind when hearing this was an example we were shown in a lecture and how art has impacted our culture on a large scale. A painting called the Hay Wain (1821) was and still is seen as the true embodiment of what english culture was, however research shows that the image was commissioned by someone of higher authority and wealth and the making it very highly likely biased and contrast with what life was truly like.

Art has a serious impact on culture and how we communicate, Eno goes into how simply a soap opera with an lgbtq character was such a good thing since the creation of that narrative in the tv shows story has allowed a discussion to be opened up a conversation, having the ability to discuss issues with a sense of ease and even humor which we can't always do so freely with everything.

Overall this lecture genuinely opened my eyes to how vast art is and the different ways its integrated into our society and the importance of it.
