Visiting professional Talk - Saul Studio

Independent studio. Working from home.

Part 1 - How he got where he is now

Internship with Gladwell looked at his work and wanted to the same type.  Culturally involved work and use of type.

Steps he took to get there.

Logan and Saul

Mathew Logan, both wanted to start design studio. Used their name for the brand.

Given a scholarship to the university. Spent on a website to showcase and celebrate work.

Part 2 - Projects he's been involved in

The coffee shop project in this he was visually working towards work he wanted to create. The project was about the drink, the people and the place.

Giving himself an allocated target to work towards, shown through a timeline.

Looking at further stockist and contacting them in order to further the project. Stocked internationally such as Berlin

In his practice, he's heavily focused on the type and gives justification of his reasoning of type. Such as the type used in the coffee shop north publication as he felt the type used was suited as it resembles the structure of a coffee making tool.

The Hubbards, connected through university. Open, a wide and heavy type called 'druk' used for this. 4 separate images of abstract shapes. Stretching the type suggested movement in the instrument's frequency of guitar and was also developed further than the album cover and used within merch.

Salvation - fashion project within a photo essay. Explore traditional religious values and modern life and how the two can coexist. He describes the work as being Modern, sharp and bold imagery.  A combination of the type is justified by what is represented in terms of the diversity of the project and reflected the architecture of the building.

Colours May vary

looking for a new presence that moved away from their old identity. This creation brought a lot of fun and colour.

The Hepworth Wakefield looking for a new identity new awards looking at sculpture.
Pitched the idea of the type 'gulax' reflecting the work well through the structure of the type.

The bear

commissioned to produce blackboard large scale infographic. Each one had a different section, brewing methods, the drinks, brewing ratio.

King street studio

Pop up dining experience, in terms of the type used is quite regal looking. suggest monarchy and stature with its appearance which works perfectly with the establishment. It's also adaptable to the platform that it can be used in.

Also, physical publishing the colour, stock and type has been considered to equally represent this.

Part 3 - Advice

"Your attitude is important to make it work" If you want to do something you have to do it.

Took the necessary steps to develop studio, creating contacts etc.

"Be proactive"

Get yourself in the right position, meet the right people, connect through social media and network. There are different methods but this one worked best for him.

Find people that understand you, find people that you understand.

Surround yourself with likeminded people who you are interested in working with.

Find your niche - expanding knowledge of what there is out there. Niche has inadvertently become associated with food and drink over time.

"A niche can be anything"

"It's not as easy as it looks"

Do/ don't move to London, the perception of London being the solution to finding work and being self-employed "you can make it work anywhere" Moving to London can be seen as the "easy" option.

Social media has been a part of finding work and starting up. But don't be turned off by the polished image that can be created with social media.

In summary:
  • That it is possible to work independently with the right tools and mindset
  • Type has a lot of importance when it comes to associating with a name
  • Embracing your niche and what you want to pursue will make your work great and more importantly stand out
  • There is a big importance in production and the planning of this
  • Take projects further and see where they can go
